FMS Introduces Moot Court Program

Caissons Take to the Court Room to Sharpen Rhetorical Skills.

Moot Court is coming to Fishburne Military School. This new extra-curricular program for Cadets is designed to hone their rhetorical skills in a fun, engaging and competitive setting.

Law schools around the world have competition Moot Court teams; but, what is MOOT?

Moot Court emphasizes critical thinking and analysis based on law and precedence. It stimulates discussion/debate based on knowledge, research and facts rather than opinion and emotions.

The Moot Court program provides an opportuinity for Fishburne Military School Cadets to gain a competitive advantage in life as they learn to present their cases succinctly, defend their positions graciously and avoid common, opinionated arguments that seem to plague our culture.

This skill applies to all of communicative life, whether it’s interviewing for a college or job opening, pitching a business idea or representing an employer; Fishburne cadets will be some of the best communicators in the room.

For a long weekend in early January, our 14 members of Fishburne Military School’s Moot Court teams began their development with guest instructor Jim Lawrence from the University of Houston.

Mr. Lawrence is an attorney who specializes in mediation and communication instruction for law students, and directs the Blakely Advocacy Institute at the University of Houston Law Center.

In the Spring, the Caissons’ Moot Court teams will be competing head to head in 2 categories: middle school and high school.

Fishburne Military School Alumnus (Class of 1970) and District Court Judge Alvin Wong will preside over the main event.

Celebrating 100 years as a US Army JROTC unit, Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in America. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
