Every Subject, Every Day
Fishburne is unique among military schools in Virginia because we’ve spent over 135 years learning how to motivate and educate young men. One of the most effective aspects of our program is the “thin-layer learning” approach in which students cover manageable amounts of every subject every day. In this way, cadets stay immersed in their subject materials throughout the year without over-extending attention spans. This traditional method of instruction eliminates the need for constant review and serves to help students master subjects thoroughly.
REAL Army JROTC
Fishburne Military School is recognized as an Honor Unit with Distinction within the US Army Cadet Command’s 4th Brigade. This gives students a distinct advantage if applying to any of the US Service Academies. The benefits of real Army JROTC instruction include the development of JROTC’s core values: Character, Personal Responsibility, Academic Achievement, Fitness, Leadership, Teamwork, Service to Community and Others, Appreciation of American Heritage and History. Belonging to an active JROTC unit means opportunities to explore interests in drill teams, competitive Raiders teams, training excursions to active bases and more.
Small Classes, Individual Attention
At Fishburne Military School, no one gets lost in the crowd. Students are more to us than their ID numbers. Classes at Fishburne average 10-13 students. Cadets are directly engaged, monitored and mentored by their instructors. Extra help sessions are readily available for those who may need a little more time with particular concepts. Our classroom instructors also serve as athletic coaches and club advisors, affording them additional contact with their pupils and insight into their personalities, learning styles and needs.
Small-town America Experience
Located in the heart of historic Waynesboro, Virginia, Fishburne Military School affords students and families the opportunity to enjoy theaters, shopping, dining and more all within easy walking distance from our campus. FMS Cadets are encouraged to participate in many local events, volunteer for area service projects, and practice their faith at local churches while feeling secure within a quintessentially American small-town community.
Commitment to Technology
Since our founding in 1879, Fishburne Military School has sought to provide young men with the strongest academic programs available. This commitment has only grown stronger over the years. Today, FMS cadets prepare for college using the latest classroom technology. SMARTBoards, Campus-wide WiFi, and a staff of caring professionals who are dedicated to a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education combine to give Fishburne students a true advantage in the transition to a college environment.
Athletic Participation for All
With thirteen varsity sports and a student body limited to two hundred outstanding young men, Fishburne Military School affords cadets an opportunity to participate, compete and excel in sports they could only watch at larger schools. Young men here are encouraged to play more than one sport and to explore new athletic interests. Fishburne cadets revel in the challenge and opportunity; and, they have brought state-wide recognition to our highly competitive and successful athletic teams.
Diverse Student Population
Fishburne cadets hail from all across the country and from around the world. At FMS we embrace diversity within our corps of cadets and understand the added advantages young men gain from exposure to different cultures. International students gain valuable experience within a safe environment while our domestic students develop a broader understanding of the world at large through lasting friendships.
100% College Placement Rate
For over a decade, FMS has boasted a 100% College Acceptance Rate for its graduates. Throughout their careers, FMS cadets are immersed in a culture where college preparation is the norm. Working closely with our Guidance Director, cadets explore opportunities and varied interests during their search for a college or university that is the right fit for them. Success in college hinges upon preparedness as well as finding a post-secondary environment where one can continue to thrive. When a Fishburne cadet earns his diploma, he leaves our campus secure in the knowledge that he can move on to a bright future at a college or university well-suited to his interests and ambitions.
Fishburne cadets are “Fishburne” for life. The Fishburne Military School Alumni Association is a powerful network of active Alumni who support one another and their alma mater. Fishburne Alumni are often leaders in their fields, who are able to mentor cadets, provide opportunities to young graduates and rally in support of their school at every opportunity. To be “Fishburne” means to be born into a second, caring family of like-minded and innovative leaders.
