Fishburne
is dedicated to developing the entire student-athlete. Fishburne
welcomes all cadets to participate in athletics at the varsity and
junior varsity level. Regardless of how cadets get involved or in which
program, they'll find athletics are a great way to channel physical
energy, stay fit and learn valuable qualities associated with
participation— including teamwork, self-discipline and good
sportsmanship. "Winning the right way" is our department's motto.
The primary objective of Fishburne Military School is to provide a
structured environment and centering to allow each cadet to succeed to
his maximum potential, and to develop each cadet into a responsible and
ethical citizen who will excel as a concerned leader in society. The
Athletic Department's position is that all of our team
members are students first and foremost. Academic achievement for each
cadet is our overriding concern, because this will provide him with the
best educational foundation for future endeavors. Cadet military
training is a vital component of the Fishburne experience that fosters
self-discipline, patriotism, teamwork and respect for tradition. In a
similar vein, the crucible of athletic contests is a key component of a
well-rounded education, and provides a terrific opportunity for learning
core values of sacrifice, hard work and subordination of self-interest
to the greater good of the team.
A well-planned
and well-supervised athletic program can provide a young man with an
opportunity to experience many of the situations, responsibilities,
difficulties and emotions he will face in adult life. This is essential
in developing his self-discipline, self-control, social skills,
self-esteem and adaptability skills. A cadet athlete can attain these
skills by striving for individual achievement within the framework of
working together as a team, working together toward common goals and
accomplishments. He will also learn how to deal with victory, defeat,
adversity, fatigue, criticism, praise and the pressures of
responsibility within the team. Our underlying goal is to emphasize hard
work, teamwork and team pride, playing smart and working together to
ensure the team reaches its potential. If we work toward realizing these
goals, then the wins and losses will take care of themselves. Respect,
as opposed to winning at all costs, is the emphasis of Fishburne's
sports programs. The only way to earn respect is by playing hard and by
playing with good sportsmanship, win or lose.
